About the Trans Murder Monitoring project

The Trans Murder Monitoring (TMM) project by TGEU (Trans Europe and Central Asia) is dedicated to documenting fatal violence against trans people across the globe. Established in April 2009, TMM monitors, collects and analyses reports of murders, with over 5,000 cases recorded to date. TGEU researchers update the data annually, releasing the latest findings each year ahead of Trans Day of Remembrance on 20 November.

When trans people are murdered, especially those further marginalised by race, immigration status, and socio-economic factors, their deaths often remain underreported. Some parts of the world, such as Latin America, have better and longer-established monitoring procedures than others. As a result, the data we received is only the tip of the iceberg. Our goal is to increase visibility around the scale of this violence and advocate for systemic change.

By partnering with local organisations and using the Uwazi platform to securely collect and analyse data, we aim to drive meaningful legal reforms and raise public awareness of trans issues across the Europe and Central Asia region.

How we collect and analyse data

TGEU’s Trans Murder Monitoring project follows a rigorous and intersectional methodology. Using Uwazi, we collect data from verified sources, including trans-led grassroots organisations, activist-researchers and media reports worldwide. Our process includes:

  • Partnerships with local activists foron-the-ground reporting.
  • Training on using Uwazi for effective datacollection.
  • Confidentiality through robust accesscontrols and anonymisation.
  • Data-driven insights, employing geospatialmapping and advanced filters to identify trends and inform policy.

Our approach empowers local trans-led organisations and their communities while ensuring the highest standards of data integrity and advocacy potential.
